Beethoven’s only opera

Fidelity to a promise. Loyalty to an ideal.

To free her husband Florestan, Leonore disguises herself as a man and takes a job in the prison where the despotic Don Pizarro holds him. In Jaume Villanueva’s interpretation, her struggle explores attraction, desire and the promise of fidelity: a loyalty capable of confronting the abuse of power.

Òpera Popular de Barcelona is preparing a fresh, contemporary interpretation of the classic, with musical direction by Salvador Brotons. Jaume Villanueva explores the limits of theatre to portray the terror of absolute power and human degradation. Fidelity and loyalty become an answer to cruelty in a lucid, intense staging designed to tour.

The stage vision

A prison.
One space.
Confinement.
No artifice.

A restrained, intense staging with the orchestra woven into the scene. Supported by light and music, bodies and scenic elements wage a battle against cruelty that transforms oppression into hope.
