Fidelio is part of Òpera Popular de Barcelona’s creative horizon: an exploration of fidelity, loyalty and freedom in the face of the abuse of power.
Beethoven’s only opera
To free her husband Florestan, Leonore disguises herself as a man and takes a job in the prison where the despotic Don Pizarro holds him. In Jaume Villanueva’s interpretation, her struggle explores attraction, desire and the promise of fidelity: a loyalty capable of confronting the abuse of power.
Staged by Jaume Villanueva, with musical direction by Salvador Brotons, the production explores fidelity to a promise and loyalty to an ideal as an answer to the terror of absolute power.
From the idea to the stage
The project is in production. The orchestra forms an integral part of the stage; light, music and bodies sustain a battle against cruelty that transforms oppression into hope.
The première is planned for 1 October 2027 at the Palau de la Música Catalana. This blog will share updates on the process, artistic team and development of the production.
