Orpheus and Eurydice in Òpera Popular de Barcelona’s staging
An Òpera Popular de Barcelona production

Christoph W. Gluck · A production by Jaume Villanueva

Orfeo ed Euridice

Journey through death
Our interpretation

The black wedding of purgatory: the shadows of Orpheus and Eurydice are condemned to relive death and the descent into hell again and again.

The production

Giove, Lethe, Amor-Aphrodite and Thanatos manipulate destiny like arrogant, dangerously human players. The production splits Orpheus and Eurydice into soul and shadow, turning the myth into a ceremony about obedience, knowledge and a love capable of defying death.

Stage world

Theatrical necromancy

A dreamlike yet strangely familiar underworld built from souls, shadows, masks, music, dance and bodies.

The production at a glance

Orfeo ed Euridice

01

Beauty and horror

A baroque altarpiece, masks, veils, a coffin and spectres create a tragic beauty sustained by pain.

02

Two realities

Voice, chorus, ballet and acrobatics reveal the split between feeling and appearance, rebellion and obedience.

03

A sad rumba

La Bonanova, the shacks of Montjuïc, the Golondrinas and an accordion bring Orpheus’s hell close to Barcelona’s memory.
